Best of the week #001: 23.ago – 30.ago

Reading

"Close-up photo of a page from a Portuguese edition of Plato's dialogue 'Eutífron' (Euthyphro), subtitled 'ou Da Religiosidade' (or On Religiosity). The page shows the heading 'PERSONAGENS DO DIÁLOGO: Eutífron e Sócrates' (Characters in the Dialogue: Euthyphro and Socrates), followed by the opening lines of the dialogue, with Eutífron asking Sócrates about his recent conversations at the King's Porch in the Lyceum."

My main reading this week was two of Plato’s dialogues: Euthyphro and Crito. It was an interesting read, because I had read a book about Socrates called “A History of Ancient Philosophy I: From the Origins to Socrates” by Giovanni Reale, and many of the theoretical topics that the author discusses in his book about the Socratic dialogues, I could recognize on my own.

Besides, something that I miss in my daily life is stopping to think about things. I don’t have a test to do after reading the philosophy texts, and I can invest a great deal of time on a single paragraph. And maybe that’s something I need to do more.

About the content of the dialogues, what I would say is: in the dialogues, like in “Euthyphro,” the eponymous character is completely sure that the way he defines religion is certainly right, but this definition is just something someone told him, and he never asks himself whether it’s true.

In this way, I thought: what are the “truths” that I’ve just accepted in my life? And well… this is a deep question, because maybe I can search within myself for the source of each definition I’ve just accepted and ask myself: is this what I really want for my life? Maybe yes, maybe not.

I started to think more about this because I’ve been reading Ancient Philosophy. When do I start consuming (any kind of media, lectures, and so on) without thinking? Without pausing? I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to pause and reflect, or do nothing at all — just breathe and “digest” what I consume.

Great tweets

I loved the music, when I was reading “A History of Ancient Philosophy” this was the feeling. lmao

I bought “Azumanga Daioh” ominibus. Azumanga is an great anime, I laughed a lot when I watched for the first time. My mother is reading now, in my opinion is an excellent exercise to her study more English.

Mathieu is the best page of memes / math that I know

A YouTube recommendation

[JUST IN PORTUGUESE] Five years ago, my favorite YouTube channels were: Quadro em Branco and Philipe Peters. After some years, I stopped watching, and then I started watching Philipe’s videos again so many times, and well… I started to watch and love it again. This video is awesome.
